Meet our Senegal scholars

Women's Global launched our flagship Sisters to School Program in Senegal, West Africa, in 2003.

UNICEF estimates that almost two-thirds of women age 15 and up in Senegal are illiterate, and that only 16 percent of all Senegalese girls finish elementary school to go on to secondary school.

Our Senegal programs are focused on the rural Sine-Saloum region of the country just north of The Gambia. To get there from Dakar requires a day-long bus ride, and transportation within the area is scarce. Many of our scholars have to walk long distances to get to the nearest school.

Women's Global partners with Démocratique Des Enseignantes de Senegal (UDEN), a national organization for Senegalese teachers, to implement our Sisters to School Program in the Sine-Saloum region. Our Senegal Project Coordinator Adji Senghor leads the local branch of UDEN to select girls for our scholarships based on need, help girls and their families with enrollment, provide tutoring, mentoring, and support, and host other initiatives designed to support girls' education.

Our Senegal Program
In Senegal, Women's Global provides scholarships to elementary and secondary school girls in rural communities who otherwise would not be able to go to school:  full scholarships which cover tuition, fees, supplies, and room and board for girls who live too far away from their nearest school; and "mini" scholarships that provide supplies and after-school tutoring to girls whose families can afford tuition fees but need extra support in order to purchase supplies and need tutoring to prepare for the rigorous grade-level exams required to move on to the next grade.

Additionally, we provide:

  • Health education workshops and health supplies to help prevent school absences from health-related issues such as malaria and other preventable illnesses
  • Mentoring opportunities to bring scholars into contact with women role models in various careers
  • Trade preparation classes for older girls who were unable to attend school to help them make a viable living through activities such as hair styling, sewing, tie-dying, and fruit transformation
  • Community awareness events to spread the word about the importance of educating girls and supporting girls in school

We also provide training and certification programs to UDEN to help their members get their certification, gain higher wages and pension, and increase their spheres of influence and opportunities to set education policies and affect change on a larger basis.
