UNICEF estimates that almost two-thirds of women age 15 and up in Senegal are illiterate, and that only 16 percent of all Senegalese girls finish elementary school to go on to secondary school. Women's Global partners with Démocratique Des Enseignantes de Senegal (UDEN), a nationalorganization for Senegalese teachers, to implement our Sisters to School Program in the Sine-Saloum region. Our Senegal Project Coordinator Adji Senghor leads the local branch of UDEN to select girls for our scholarships based on need, help girls and their families with enrollment, provide tutoring, mentoring, and support, and host other initiatives designed to support girls' education. Our Senegal Program In Senegal, Women's Global provides 30 elementary school full scholarships and 30 secondary school full scholarships which cover tuition, fees, supplies, and room and board for girls who live too far away from their nearest school. We also provide 40 "mini" scholarships that provide supplies and after-school tutoring to girls whose families can afford tuition fees but need extra support in order to purchase supplies and to prepare for the rigorous grade-level exams required to move on to the next grade.
